Lesson Plan Overview
Proposed Lesson Plan:
After a discussion/lecture on microwaves, how they work and safety issues(so they will not get hurt, such as using hot pads and more when removing food). Then students will see a demonstration given by the teachers on how they can use the microwave for cooking a variety of foods and will then get to test it themselves. They will learn what they can use and not use in a microwave and better techniques to help food cook the right way. They will see how much can actually be done besides reheating food.
* This would be appropriate for any student at the high school who is enrolled in a family and consumer science exploration cooking class.(Food And Nutrition I) Everyone needs to know the proper use and safety for microwaves.
Utah Core Curriculum and Standard:
* Standard 20.0108-01 Students will apply the skills of kitchen equipment and management.
*Objective 20.0108-0102Explain the basic principles of cooking in a microwave.
-Identify that microwaves are attracted to fat, sugar, and water molecules
-Explain basic microwave cooking rules
-Identify how microwaves cook food
-Identify appropriate cooking containers
-Discuss cooking time, standing time and ways to increase even cooking
-Discuss prevention of burns and exploding or splattering of food
Technologies: The main teachnology I will use will be the microwave (since that is one of the things on our wiki page), but I will also include a small powerpoint for the lecture before the students get hands on experience with technology in the kitchen.
Example: The students will be cooking a complete meal, ( including dessert and more) using what they learned about the microwave for all the cooking.
Assessment:Since the will be demonstrating what they learned about microwaves and how to use them properly by cooking a meal the assessment will come through sampling what they made to see how well it cooked or didn't. I will also assess them to see if the followed the proper safety procedures while using the microwave. I will be walking around and observing them while they are cooking their meal.
